Join an amazing team for an adventurous evening of art and science, cocktails and creativity at Blackrock Castle Observatory. Astrophysicist and amateur mixologist Dr Alfredo Carpineti will share astronomy beyond the visible, diving into a colourful exploration of dark matter, radio waves, ultra violet and gravitational waves. Along the way he’ll turn Venus into a disco ball, paint the audience in blacklight, and serve up Sagittarius B2 cocktails based on the taste of a nebula.
As Dr Carpineti unpacks the science behind the unseen universe, artist Helen O’Keefe will respond in real time, sketching visual interpretations and inviting the audience to do the same. Participants will explore cosmic ideas through pens, paper, and UV materials, creating their own artistic responses to the unseen universe.
All materials will be provided and no scientific or artistic background is required. Non-alcoholic drink alternatives will be availiable.

DR ALFREDO CARPINETI is a gay Italian astrophysicist, science journalist, and social activist. He holds a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and an M.Sc. in Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces from Imperial College. Alfredo is the chair and founder of Pride in STEM and has been recognized as one of Attitude’s LGBTQ+ Trailblazers.
HELEN O’KEEFE has worked in participatory and youth arts for ten years. She has an MA in Art & Design Education from CCAD and considerable experience and training in art, design and community work. She is on staff at MTU’s Creativity & Change and the head art teacher at alternative education setting, Cork Life Centre.
