Explore the history of space observation and discover your inner poet through this workshop pondering how images of distant galaxies from billions of years in the past, their light just now reaching us, causes us to reconsider what we think we know about time.
Participants will have the opportunity to tour UCC’s historic 1881 Crawford Observatory in a private visit led by UCC Head of Astrophysics Dr Paul Callanan. A 90-minute workshop led by poet Kerri Sonnenberg will follow in the Dr Dora Allman room, with incredible views across the night sky. All materials are provided and no previous poetry experience is necessary.

KERRI SONNENBERG is author of the poetry collection, The Mudra (Litmus Press, USA). Recent work appears in the journals Magma, Southword and Volt. She is the recipient of bursary awards from the Arts Council, Cork City Council and the Irish Writers Centre. She has previously led creative writing workshops through Greywood Arts and the KinShip Project.
PROFESSOR PAUL CALLANAN is Head of School at UCC Physics. He has a PhD from NUI Galway. He followed this as a Research Associate in the Department of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford and a Hubble Fellowship at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (Mass). Paul played a central role in the restoration of the 1880 Crawford Observatory in UCC.
